Earthenware Plate with Hand-Drawn Camellia by Kazuji Sato
Earthenware Plate with Hand-Drawn Camellia by Kazuji Sato
This plate giving you a warm and comforting vibe is made by Kazuji Sato, a potter in Tajimi, Gifu. You will see how it adds peace and a sense of calm as it compliments and works beautifully with the rest of your tableware. Let’s take a quick look at his stunning work.
Here we see a camellia flower complete with Shino and Iron glazes that convey a warm touch and strong presence. What I really like about camellia is it is written 椿 in kanji which is composed of 木(tree) and 春(spring); how endearing! It is a tree blooming in anticipation of the arrival of spring during the coldest time of winter! In this way, the camellia is considered a symbol of perseverance, vitality, and good luck. This plate really brings warmth to your table, just like when spring is coming. It’s a beautiful reminder to have hope even when things seem dark and cold.
As other pieces by Mr.Sato, this plate is not over the top or gaudy. You can feel Sato’s personality here. In an article about Mr.Sato, I read about how he finds pleasure in eating and drinking sake everyday, which led him to make pottery that focuses on everyday use. Along these lines, his pieces are robust and easy to care for, while still being works of immense beauty. In this way, his interests lie not only in creating things of beauty, but of practicality; creating everyday tableware that stirs to life our love of art. This stunning plate is one example of this!
It is quite an experience to see his work in person, and it is of course a perfect opportunity for you to do the same by calling this beautiful piece your own. Although it fits beautifully in a Japanese-style table setting, it blends perfectly with any tableware aesthetic; including Chinese and Western.
