A set of cashew lacquered chopsticks made in Wajima.

In old Japan, it was believed that used chopsticks contained the spirit of the person using them. It was thought that the chopsticks became that person’s alter ego, and thus were a connection to the divine.  Therefore, instead of sharing chopsticks, each person usually owns their own dedicated pair at home.  They are not even shared between husband and wife, or parent and child!  Someone else’s chopsticks are never used at home.

*Cashew Lacque refers to a coating agent made from the oil extracted from the shell of cashew nuts (cashew nut shell oil). It produces a luxurious sheen similar to lacquer, so it is often used as an alternative to lacquer. One of the merits of the cashew lacque coating is a slip prevention, so this is good for newbies using chopsticks!
