This stunning Inuyama ware sake cup is newly arriving to our online store! You’ll find yourself constantly stopping to stare at the clean powerful brushstrokes of this piece of art!

Inuyama ware hails from Aichi prefecture and is one of the area’s traditional Japanese crafts. Only three pottery studios are currently still in operation in Inuyama City in Aichi.  The pottery primarily made uses a glaze and coloring technique called “Gosu Akae”. The “aka” in “akae” has a linguistic meaning of red or vermillion in Japanese. The term “Akae” here however does not refer to the color but has come to mean “colored glaze” in pottery terms in general. This glaze is also painted in blue, yellow, green, purple and other colors also now.

The cup we are admiring here is dressed in gorgeous vermillion akae brushwork with accents in gold that elevate the piece. This piece is not so sophisticated in the way that fine porcelain is though, it is done in a subtle understated way that also avoids pretention. It draws you in again and again with its beauty and elevated vibe. This piece is so warmly humble, but with a dilligence and flare for detail.
