Earthenware Plate with Hand-Drawn Spring Scenery by Kazuji Sato
Earthenware Plate with Hand-Drawn Spring Scenery by Kazuji Sato
Let us take your breath away with this brilliant work by Kazuji Sato, a potter in Tajimi, Gifu. This piece depicts Spring scenery with a horsetail, a warabi plant, and other spring flowers. You may also notice a mountain complete with Oribe glaze as well as a general hazy Spring atmosphere perfectly conveyed through Shino glazing. The surface of this piece has a spotty and almost scorched coloring here and there due to the firing technique. As the angle changes, you may see brown, gray or silver. These accents really are impactful. I’m really struck by this treasure of pottery excellence. I find myself sighing while looking at this luxurious creation.
The drawing style you see here is called “Kenzan Utsushi”. Kenzan was a great potter in the Edo period (about 300 years ago), while “utsushi” means “to copy” in Japanese. Many potters since that period have admired his work and still pay homage to him today. This stunning plate is one example of this, but I also really feel Sato’s personality here too! In an article about Mr. Sato, I read about how he finds pleasure in eating and drinking sake everyday, which led him to make pottery that focuses on everyday use. Along these lines, his pieces are robust and easy to care for, while still being works of immense beauty. In this way, his interests lie not only in creating things of beauty, but of practicality; creating everyday tableware that stirs to life our love of art!
It is quite an experience to see his work in person, and it is of course a perfect opportunity for you to do the same by calling this beautiful piece your own. Although it fits beautifully in a Japanese-style table setting, it blends perfectly with any tableware aesthetic; including Chinese and Western. Mr. Sato’s pieces are warm and comforting; not over the top or gaudy. You will see how they add peace and a sense of calm as they compliment and work beautifully with the rest of your tableware.
