Blue Sake Cup in AnnanStyle Yuki Ando Porcelain
Blue Sake Cup in AnnanStyle Yuki Ando Porcelain
This ochoko boast a motif in the stunning Vietnamese style of Annan ware!
It is an amazing representation of Vietnamese Annan ware in Japan. This style came into Japan sometime between the 14th-16th centuries from Vietnam, and is characterized by blurred lines painted on a thin light gray porcelain surface; you can see the infinite fine streaks there. In the old days, Vietnam was heavily affected by Chinese culture and this included ceramic manufacturing. Here, however, we can see a more laid-back, warm vibe with these cups, and the stroke tension is very loose. This all results in a lovely soft impression; just like the wonderful people of Vietnam.
Annan style was first brought into Japan about 450 years ago and was surprisingly used for tea ceremonies. Only tea masters and other nobility had a chance to own these at that time. Papers written on the Annan ware found in Japan revealed something very interesting. Some Annan designs and motifs were found in Japanese excavations but not back in Vietnam! This can be explained as Vietnam sending these particular Annan motifs exclusively for Japanese masters to use in their tea ceremonies at that time.
We don’t know if the people 450 years ago in Japan already had Annan sake cups or not but they are present today. This amazing ochoko here is an example of that. It is the work of Ms.Yuki Ando in Tajimi, Gifu. Her pieces show how much she respects Annan ware and holds it in high regard. She is proud of the knowledge and skill she continues to acquire and learn. She truly understands the philosophy and spirit of Annan ware and its origins. We would love for you to actually hold this treasure in your hands and call her splendid ochoko your own.
