Pink Porcelain Sake Cup by Hideki Hayashi

The carved patterns on this piece give it an exotic impression. Every single one of this artist’s works is a literal one-of-a-kind work of art. Once you see them, you will never forget his impactful designs and artistic vibe. This cup also has beautiful crazing on the surface.

Mr. Hayashi was born into a potter family situated in the Mino region of Japan. This area is full of pottery! He grew up immersed in the continued pottery tradition of the area and of his own family. In some articles, he has said he experienced feelings of tremendous stimulation and energy from the surroundings there which led him to create his stunning works. Although they have a modern feeling, you can still see the influence from his predecessors and birthplace. Mr. Hayashi’s passion for his art comes through in every piece.

Looking at his work is quite an experience.  You can see the variety of techniques used in all of his amazing works and this makes his pieces very original. Take a look at this novel piece with the pink glazing. He really thinks “outside the box”!  Pink glaze is already so unique, but the way it travels down the cup also makes this work stand out.  The glazing combined with the brighter and shadier tones are truly elements of note here. If you look carefully, you can even see another glaze under the pink one which gives this piece an impression of depth and warmth.  You may also notice the beautiful carving. Mr. Hayashi used some different techniques here using different sizes of knives.  I get a vibe of lively busy-ness from his knife work!

As a last note, there is something significant that only holding his piece in your own hands can give you. This something is texture and touch! His work has a rough feeling that is somehow delicate at the same time. You will notice this delicacy in the feeling of the surface.
